How does a self-watering planter work?
The pot has two parts: an inner grow pot holding soil and plant, and an outer reservoir holding water. A wick or wicking channel connects them. Soil pulls water up only as it dries, so roots stay evenly moist without sitting in water. A gauge on the side shows the reservoir level.
How often do I refill?
It depends on pot size, plant and room. Small pots (5–6") typically go 1–2 weeks. Medium and large pots 2–3 weeks. Window boxes and floor planters with big reservoirs can go a month or more with low-water plants like snake plants, ZZs and pothos. The gauge takes the guesswork out — refill when it reads MIN.
Which plants work best?
Most tropical houseplants love consistent moisture: pothos, philodendron, peace lily, ferns, calathea, spider plants, herbs, African violets. Succulents and cacti prefer to dry out completely, so use a smaller reservoir or let the gauge sit at MIN for a week before refilling.
Do I need special soil?
Regular potting mix is fine. A mix with some perlite or coco coir wicks especially well. Avoid heavy garden soil.
Can I use these outdoors?
Yes, on a covered patio or balcony. In open rain the reservoir can overflow, so keep them under cover or check after storms.
